more like Tommy. Work hard, play hard. Tommy has been such an example and inspiration to us all. The master of understatement. Tommy’s loyalty
to his family and many friends, to his hounds and to his horse was fundamental to his life. It was automatic and guaranteed. In return for his affection
and respect, his hounds and his horse would perform to their limits. He had an empathy and feel for crossing country which will never be equalled .He knew every farmer, farm, ditch and bank in the country. He and PP Hogan were most probably the best horsemen to hounds ever born. After the
best of  hunts, Tommy’s horse would have hardly raised a sweat when all around him horses were spent.
His quiet way with hounds was exemplary. He could have hunted any pack in the country, and the offers were there but he chose to stay loyal to
these lads. The twinkle in his eye and his smile will live with us always.
He taught us the value of trust and respect. Trust your hounds and trust your horse and trust those about you. You might get let down once but it
doesn’t happen again. He had to carry me that season and ever since.
I got a text from someone on hearing the sad news. It read… you know there are hounds in Heaven…. I know they have to be Scarteen hounds and Tommy is with them.
To his wife, Annette, and his sons John and James we offer our sympathy.

Scarteen Hunt, Tommy O’ Dwyer R.I.P.

Sunday 21st June 2009, 17:20

Tommy O’ Dwyer. 1934 – 2009. R.I.P.

Tommy passed away peacefully on the 28th May. Tommy came into the Scarteen Kennels at the age 14 and never left. His father, Jack, was kennel huntsman before him. Hunting, racing, greyhounds and the G.A.A. were his interests and his life. He won a junior All-Ireland Hurling medal for Limerick.

Today’s celebrity culture doesn’t sit too well with those of us with some years behind us. When we were growing up heroes were real heroes with qualities that had more depth and sincerity than we might find nowadays. When we were growing up Tommy was our idol, our hero. Sincerity, integrity, dedication, loyalty and an inherent knowledge on hunting he would share and explain to those close to him. I came home from school one day with a rather poor end of year report. Dad called me in and the first thought that came to him has stayed with me. Why can’t you be

Scarteen Short Format Event

Monday 22nd June 2009, 16:30

A fine day and a challenging but fair track met those who made the journey to Scarteen for what was billed as the perfect warm-up for the upcoming Pony Club Horse Trials series.

This was the second Short Format event to be held at Scarteen and the format looks to be going down well with competitors with riders performing a standard P.C. Dressage test followed by a derby jumping round. As well as attempting to keep the fences intact, riders were aware of the Style mark (max. 20) which was awarded by renowned P.C. instructor Jill Moran.

Sole Members competitor Leo Dooley from the Warrington Branch picked up no penalties in the jumping phase and completed on a score of 154pts.

Eophan Robson, Lily Ma’chello (Clare Branch)

The Intermediate class was hotly contested but problems for dressage leader Siobhán Schous in the jumping phase dropped her into second place with Cahir based Emma Meaghar taking the top position for the Tipperary Hunt Branch with “Clonmore CC”.

Eophan Robson and “Lily Ma’chello” from the Clare branch impressed the judges to take  pole position in the Junior section, ahead of fellow Clare member Maebh Jacob with her own “Jimmy”.

The feedback received by the organisers to date has been positive and a second Short Format Event is being considered for later on in the season. To find out more, visit our “Derby Track” page or email scarteenshortformat@topmail.ie

Future Event Horse League Qualifier I

Sunday 12th July 2009, 15:10

Stars shine through the rain

All the professionals turned up for the first of the FEHL Qualifiers at Chris and Sue Ryan’s popular Scarteen venue last week. True to form of previous years, the heavens remained open for all of the four-year old classes but could not detract from the eye-catching performances of the youngsters.

Gone are the days of multiple eliminations and bar the derby rails on top of a bank, clear rounds would have been in abundance. Louise Codd, now running her own yard as well as riding Alice and Barry Kehoe’s Westwinds event horses, won the opener riding Ballycreen Milord.

The King’s Master gelding, purchased by Sally Parkyn to go eventing for her friend Helen White, now residing in the U.K. finished 10 marks ahead of Sassy Cassy, a mare by Cascaletto St Ghyvan ridden by James O’ Haire, with the good looking Ghareeb gelding Spring Galaxy, ridden by Jo Dudley, in third place.

Competition was much hotter in the second section of the four-year-olds where the first four home finished within three marks of each other. Claire Connors’ owned, ridden and bred Grange Bouncer mare Bally Bouncer won the class from Dervor Lad (by Harlequin du Carel), ridden by Louise Codd, with Chief Sensation (by Red Navajo), with Claire Lambert in the saddle, taking third place.

Seamus Hayes gave an outstanding display of jumping in the first section of the five-year-old class on June Burgess’s Over the Vee. Combined with the leading dressage mark, the Ard Onio gelding went on to win the class from CAFRE Golden Eclipse (by Aldato) – one of Katie O’ Sullivan’s four rides of the day and equally impressive over the fences, with Sarah Ennis producing the only clear round inside the time taking third place, riding Stellor Rebound (by VDL Ricochet).

There was an impressive line-up in the second section of the five-year-old class where last year’s league winners Mary Kehoe and OBOS Kristoff led the field. David McCann’s newcomer to the FEHL circuit but already a winner under EI Rules, Bosun (by Cruising), ridden by Claire Gilna, came second with John Bannon and Remax Royal Touch (by Touchdown) in third place.
